What is sentience? The simplest definition is being self-aware. Once again we are back to "Cogito ergo sum: I think, therefore I am". Many creatures are self-aware but they can neither express it verbally or comprehend the idea of sentience.

Nevertheless, the fact that many animals display sentient behavior has led some to believe that animals have souls too. If you accept the idea that a soul does, then why not expand that to include animals.
